Poka Yoke

In our recent Operational Excellence Insight we posted that a good working definition of the intent of Poka Yoke is "Make it easy to do the right things the right way".   (Read the complete article: Poka Yoke - Not Just For Production Anymore.)

We also invited your comments on:

  • Do you have a different working definition?
  • Any good examples of Poka Yoke in an administrative or office application?
  • We used a self-check-out kiosk as an example of Poka Yoke.  However, do you have any self-checkout horror stories or better examples?

Add your point of view!

Your writings in Operational Excellence Insights are quite good for the lean practioner that is, the people using the lean tool kit. I would like to see more about lean manufacturing and the associated issues senior management has to effectively deal with to make lean manufacturing a real contributor to our financial performance.

The fact is, the knowledge about lean tools is usually present however, sustained application of real measureable business results from lean manufacturing is very little to none at most companies I know-and, that's quite a few.

THe example of a self check out is pretty good but I think the physical connections to a PC is an even better example. You can't hook-up something that will cause damage to the machine and if the plug fits, it is compatable. On the other hand, software, drivers, operating systems are a very different story - definitely NOT Poka Yoked!
